STOP
THE WAR RALLY
[London, Saturday 22nd March 2003]
Over 750,00 people demanding a stop to the illegal
war against the people
of Iraq and for Blair to resign as Prime Minister.
After failing to get UN backing for their war, arrogantly Bush
and Blair tossed the UN aside and, ignoring the wishes of their
own people and the opinion of the world, unleashed a criminal
invasion of Iraq. In London, (and all around the world) an emergency
anti-war rally was organised for the first Saturday after the
invasion.
All forms of propaganda was used on the British people to
dissuade them from attending - "British troops are there
now so its unpatriotic to be antiwar" ..." the war
will be over by the weekend so there is no point in demonstrating"
..."to demonstrate is to support Saddam", etc. The
Liberal-Democrat leadership which was previously staunchly
antiwar now capitulated and declined to give its support to
the rally. A war which was morally wrong before it started
had suddenly become legitimate upon starting simply because
British soldiers were now involved!
The media were predicting a few thousand people at most would
attend the rally. On the day however all predictions were
shattered and over 750,000 people turned up, all demanding
an end to the war. This made it the largest ever antiwar demonstration
during war time in the UK.
Freedom For Palestine
Although the purpose of the rally was "stop the war",
the double standards in the treatment of Iraq to Israel did
not go unnoticed and the protesters with their banners made
the rally as much about "justice and freedom for Palestine"
as it was about ending an unjust war against the people of
Iraq.
Two English people with messages for their
Prime Minister Tony Blair - if only he would listen.
"REGIME CHANGE begins at home"
"Invasion of Iraq - NOT in my name"
The mood of the marchers was one of disappointment and anger
at their government for blindly being led by the US in to
an illegal, immoral and unjust slaughter of the innocent in
Iraq. There were calls for "regime change at home"
- "Blair must go" and for sanctions to be placed
on the US. For a total consumer boycott of all US and Israeli
products. And for Bush and Blair to face war crimes charges.
One banner suggested that in the interest of saving further
lives Bush should immediately be killed.
A succinct solution?
The demonstration was jointly organised by the Muslim
Association of Britain and Stop
the War Coalition. As with the previous demo, the march
had multiple routes starting from the Embankment and Gower
Street. They culminated in a rally at Hyde Park.
The rally was rewarded with dozens of speakers ranging from
MPs, Union Leaders, Muslims, Christians and Jews, Peace Groups,
Iraqis in exile and Journalists including Tony Benn, Yvonne
Ridley, Ken Livingstone and George Galloway. We have provided
some of the speeches below for you to listen to.

Bruce
Kent, Peace movement veteran, CND:
"I
want to tell you that something in Scotland yesterday
made Tony Blair very annoyed indeed. It was when
people said in front of him 'Maggi! Maggi! Out!
Out!'. Tony Blair is running a war which is worse
than anything Maggi Thatcher ever ran...
What
I saw and what you saw on television last night,
it was not a war, it was a massacre, it was barbarity.
It was the most powerful country in the world that
spends half the worlds military budget, smashing
it to the ground a great city and ancient civilisation.
It was a crime, an enormous crime...
What wasn't shown on the BBC: Slaughter
of the innocent
I warn Tony Blair
and Jack Straw that we will do everything we can
to put them in front of the International Criminal
Court, that's where they ought to be. What they
are doing is criminal."
He then drew parallels between the the soldiers
invading Iraq and those occupying Palestine:
"My answer
to 'our boys' [soldiers] is that the best thing
they can do for themselves and for the world is
stop this stupid war... I would say to the Jewish
people that some of the bravest young men in the
world are those that have refused to obey orders
to occupy the West Bank..."

Dr Ghada Karmi
Dr.
Ghada Karmi, Palestinian Academic:
"The
problem in the Middle East is not Iraq as they want
you to believe - it is Israel, and Israels war against
the Palestinian people. It is the tragedy of Palestine,
still unresolved, that is the real issue...
They
say they are looking for weapons of mass destruction.
To them we say look in Israel!
Bush
and Blair say they are punishing Iraq for breaching
United Nations resolutions, to them we say what
about Israel?
Bush
and Blair say Iraq has possible links with international
terrorism. To them we say go to Israel to see actual
state terrorism.
Bush
has a list of rogue states that he wants to tackle,
but he's missed out the one rogue state which occupies
other peoples land and has weapons of mass destruction
- Israel!
Freedom for Palestine
Today
as a Palestinian I fear for my compatriots under
Sharons yoke. He intends to liquidate the Palestine
problem under the cover of the war on Iraq. That
means more killings, eighty Palestinians killed
last month, eighty more already killed this month,
more oppression, more starvation, more homelessness,
more theft of Palestinian land and now something
else - expulsions and ethnic cleansing. And against
this Israeli onslaught what does Bush and Blair
offer? The Middle East road map - too little, too
late."
She stressed the importance of attending these
rallies and not staying silent:
"If
we work together, we fight together we can win.
And remember, in case you feel helpless, silence
is complicity, inaction is complicity. Let everyone
who cares for morality, humanity and justice now
stand up and be counted!"

Question:
Do you see us embarking on a new world
order?
Answer:
Yes, I think there are two things going
on. One is a sort of slow international
coup where the systems of global governments
that we have got at the moment, deeply
flawed as it is, very weak as it is,
is gradually being pushed aside by Washington
in favour of a system of global governments
run by Washington. At the same time
we see some very clever strategic manoeuvres
all over the world, getting hold of
and securing some of the key strategic
regions, particularly the regions which
produce oil and regions through which
oil could be transported...

Bush
planned Iraq 'regime change' before
becoming President, before Sept 11
By Neil Mackay,
Sunday Herald - 15 September 2002
A Secret blueprint for US global domination reveals
that President Bush and his cabinet were planning
a premeditated attack on Iraq to secure 'regime change'
even before he took power in January 2001.
The blueprint, uncovered by the Sunday Herald, for
the creation of a 'global Pax Americana' was drawn
up for Dick Cheney (now vice- president), Donald Rumsfeld
(defence secretary), Paul Wolfowitz (Rumsfeld's deputy),
George W Bush's younger brother Jeb and Lewis Libby
(Cheney's chief of staff). The document, entitled
Rebuilding America's Defences: Strategies, Forces
And Resources For A New Century, was written in September
2000 by the neo-conservative think-tank Project for
the New American Century (PNAC).
The plan shows Bush's cabinet intended to take military
control of the Gulf region whether or not Saddam Hussein
was in power. It says: 'The United States has for
decades sought to play a more permanent role in Gulf
regional security. While the unresolved conflict with
Iraq provides the immediate justification, the need
for a substantial American force presence in the Gulf
transcends the issue of the regime of Saddam Hussein.'
The PNAC document supports a 'blueprint for maintaining
global US pre-eminence, precluding the rise of a great
power rival, and shaping the international security
order in line with American principles and interests'.
The
New Nazis - America & Israel
Parallels between American policy of global
domination and nazi aspirations of similar
domination cannot be ignored
This 'American grand strategy' must be advanced for
'as far into the future as possible', the report says.
It also calls for the US to 'fight and decisively
win multiple, simultaneous major theatre wars' as
a 'core mission'.
The report describes American armed forces abroad
as 'the cavalry on the new American frontier'. The
PNAC blueprint supports an earlier document written
by Wolfowitz and Libby that said the US must 'discourage
advanced industrial nations from challenging our leadership
or even aspiring to a larger regional or global role'.
The PNAC report also:
- refers to key allies such as the UK as 'the
most effective and efficient means of exercising
American global leadership';
- describes peace-keeping missions as 'demanding
American political leadership rather than that of
the United Nations';
- reveals worries in the administration that Europe
could rival the USA;
- says 'even should Saddam pass from the scene'
bases in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait will remain permanently
-- despite domestic opposition in the Gulf regimes
to the stationing of US troops -- as 'Iran may well
prove as large a threat to US interests as Iraq
has';
- spotlights China for 'regime change' saying 'it
is time to increase the presence of American forces
in southeast Asia'. This, it says, may lead to 'American
and allied power providing the spur to the process
of democratisation in China';
- calls for the creation of 'US Space Forces',
to dominate space, and the total control of cyberspace
to prevent 'enemies' using the internet against
the US;
- hints that, despite threatening war against Iraq
for developing weapons of mass destruction, the
US may consider developing biological weapons --
which the nation has banned -- in decades to come.
It says: 'New methods of attack -- electronic, 'non-lethal',
biological -- will be more widely available ...
combat likely will take place in new dimensions,
in space, cyberspace, and perhaps the world of microbes
... advanced forms of biological warfare that can
'target' specific genotypes may transform biological
warfare from the realm of terror to a politically
useful tool';
- and pinpoints North Korea, Libya, Syria and Iran
as dangerous regimes and says their existence justifies
the creation of a 'world-wide command-and-control
system'.
Take the PR and spin away to reveal
the true US
Tam Dalyell, the Labour MP, father of the House of
Commons and one of the leading rebel voices against
war with Iraq, said: 'This is garbage from right-wing
think-tanks stuffed with chicken-hawks -- men who
have never seen the horror of war but are in love
with the idea of war. Men like Cheney, who were draft-dodgers
in the Vietnam war.
'This is a blueprint for US world domination -- a
new world order of their making. These are the thought
processes of fantasist Americans who want to control
the world. I am appalled that a British Labour Prime
Minister should have got into bed with a crew which
has this moral standing.'

Jeremy Dear
Jeremy
Dear, General Secretary, National Union of
Journalists [NUJ]:
He talked about the restrictions placed on the
press to prevent them from reporting the truth:
"Yesterday
the owner of a hundred and thirty newspapers in
Britain published a statement in his newspapers,
a statement saying that during the war press freedom
would be suspended, your right to know would be
removed, no criticism of this war would be tolerated!
In
the US George Cloony, Meryl Streep, Jim Carey and
Will Smythe have all been banned from making antiwar
statements at tomorrow nights Oscars. And across
the world pop songs are banned from radio and artists
are black listed for wearing t-shirts against this
illegal and immoral war.
This
is what they mean by their new world order - they
remove your human rights in the name of freedom.
And they do it because they dont want you to know
the truth, the truth that this war is illegal, its
immoral... They dont want you to know that the reality
of precision bombing and surgical strikes it that
a hospital is hit and two missiles land in Iran.
And they dont want you to know the truth that the
coalition of the willing is really the coalition
of those that have been bribed and threatened in
to supporting the United States. But most of all
they dont want you to know that today across the
world millions of people are marching and acting
not just for peace, not just against war, but for
a better world...
He made it clear that antiwar doesn't mean pro-Saddam:
People
shouldn't mistake our opposition to war as support
for Saddam. We need no lectures, because we were
marching and demonstrating on the streets when he
killed workers in Iraq, when he gassed the Kurds.
And we were there when the US and UK governments
were busy financing and arming his regime, protesting
against him."
And he didn't forget the Palestinians:
"...
Imagine a world where there was real justice and
freedom for the Palestinian people. Now that would
be a war that would be worth fighting.
Palestinian flags - the most popular
flag of the rally
Our
message today is simple - there can be no peace
until there is justice and we will continue to fight
for justice... and a better world."

"Let
no one be fooled - no one is a friend of Saddam
Hussein and no one is oblivious to his crimes and
human rights abuses, but how can we forget that
if it weren't for the American, British and Western
governments the Iraqi people would have disposed
of him a long time ago!
Amongst
the brutal crimes of Saddam is that his victims
family have to pay for the bullet with which their
loved ones were killed. Now that the US government
has stated that most of Iraqs oil revenues will
be used to pay for the reconstruction of the country
after this catastrophic aggression. I surely cannot
see the difference between the two, nor tell who
is the better of the two monsters."

Lady

"I
am speaking as a teacher, as a teacher I extend my
solidarity to the teachers of Iraq and the children
of Iraq. Our union has sent out advice for teachers
in the UK about how to deal with the problems faced
by our pupils because of this war. This is welcomed.
But I cannot even begin to imagine the problems faced
by Iraqi teachers when trying to explain to their
pupils what is happening and why their country is
being targeted.
To
the teachers of Iraq I can only express my deep shame
at being in any way associated with this merciless
attack on your country.
I
ask this government and Tony Blair how can we teach
our children to tell the truth when this government
disguises brutality as liberation?
How
can we teach children to care for others when this
government is prepared to spend three and a half billion
pounds to prosecute their war when all over the world
people are dying of starvation and we stand by and
do nothing?
Greed Kills - Stop The War
How
can we teach our pupils to be fair to one another
when one state occupies and brutalises its neighbour
Palestine and its given a million dollars a day in
aid while another is simply judged to have failed
to have complied with United Nations resolutions and
the whole might of the US army is unleashed on it?
How
can we teach them democracy and respecting other peoples
point of view when this government is prepared to
ignore the views of the majority of its own people
and the majority of the nations of the world?
How
can we teach them that bullying is wrong when they
see our government supporting the biggest, wealthiest
and strongest country in the world as it lays in to
one of the weakest?"

Art Against
The War
"Bombing Iraq Won't Help"
The placard shows details from Picasso's Guernica. The
original 1937 painting depicts the terrorized and dying
civilians at Guernica, a small Basque village in northern
Spain that was bombed by the German Luftwaffe in support
of Francisco Francos Nationalist army battling
the Republican government during the Spanish Civil War.
About 1,600 civilians were killed or wounded in three
hours of bombardment.
For an entire generation of Europeans
the bombing of Guernica and Picassos interpretation
of the event signified the barbarity of fascism and
the widespread determination to resist its violence
and brutality.
Picasso himself described Guernica
as "the picture of all bombed cities"
A tapestry of Guernica has hung outside
the U.N. Security Council since 1985. In an act of extraordinary
censorship United Nations officials covered up the tapestry
during US Secretary of State Colin Powells February
5 presentation of the American case for war against
Iraq.
Aside from its general evocation of
antiwar sentiment, Picassos painting threatened
to speak to historical parallels that the Bush administration
and UN officials were clearly determined that the media
or the public should not make.
A group of protesters held up copies
of Picassos painting outside the UN on Wednesday
while Powell was making his warmongering appeal.

The
whole world is united as never before against
this war of aggression on Iraq. This war has been
launched in defiance of the world and the world

"we
will never forget and will never forgive..."
The
truth is that the war is for the control of oil
in Iraq, the creation of a puppet regime, and
in the words of Donald Rumsfeld 'to teach by example'.
And wars make money. Every bullet that's fired,
uncle Sam takes a dollar, not to mention lucrative
contracts for the reconstruction of Iraq. The
more destruction there is the more reconstruction
and more money is made. This is the logic of capitalism
and imperialism.
We
are told that the people of Iraq and Iraqi exiles
are in favour of the war. We are told that the
people in Baghdad cannot wait for a missile to
hit them, we are told that they can't wait for
the next b-52 to drop bombs on them. Let me tell

Introduction from their website on what a human
shield is all about:
"What would happen if several thousand
Western citizens migrated to Iraq to stand side
by side with the Iraqi people? The world's most
powerful nation could be stopped in its imperialist
tracks if thousands of Westerners might be killed
by its oil/power lust war.
The Plan - To insight a mass migration of people
to Iraq. To garner support by taking a convoy
of buses from London to Baghdad. Our departure
date is tentatively set for mid to late January
from London but this is subject to the evolving
situation. We plan to travel through Europe
via London, Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris, Dachau
Concentration Camp, Munich, Milan, Sarajevo,
Istanbul, Halab on our way to Baghdad. All things
going as planned we will conduct brief rallies
and pick up more Human Shield volunteers along
the way. Once in Baghdad we might set up a tent
city and deploy ourselves to areas that are
essential to the civilian population such as
water plants, power plants, food silos, oil
refineries, etc.
It is these sorts of sites that were criminally
targeted by the U.S. in the 1991 Gulf War. Under
international law, to which the U.S. is party,
it is a war crime to harm or destroy facilities
that provide essential services to the civilian
population. If these sites are hit once again
it will be the economic and environmental destruction,
spreading of disease and lack of water that
will so shamefully hit the children and poor
yet again."

Never
misunderstand what the policy of full spectrum dominance
is about. The American pentagon, when Clinton was
still there, came out with a policy what they call
full spectrum dominance. United States intended
to dominate the world by space, by air, by land,
by sea and by information. And the most powerful
weapon that they are deploying in Britain is misinformation
about what is happening. There are information officers
controlled by the pentagon and the ministry of defence
who are deliberately misleading us, and keeping
us in ignorance in the hope that we can be brought
to support the war and that's why these demonstrations
are so important. When you come here you will hear

you wont hear in the Sun or in the Daily Mail. You

few. They have the tanks, we have the people."

George Galloway, MP
George
Galloway, Member of British Parliament:
He started with an attack on the extreme
bias of the BBC:
"My first words I want to address to the BBC, I
want them to remember that they are supposed to be the
BRITISH Broadcasting Corporation, not a Bush Broadcasting
Corporation. Not the Blair Broadcasting Corporation!
It is we the people who pay their wages by our licence
fees. I am tired of being marginalised and trivialised
when we speak for the majority of the British people..."
Then he blasted Blairs false patriotism:
"Mr Blair says that now the bugles have blown we
must all fall in to line. Well we say that the idea
of my country right or wrong belongs in the 19th century
with the gun boat diplomacy that he is deploying. That
is the false patriotism which is the last refuge of
the scoundrel. We will support our country when it is
right and we will oppose our country when it is wrong!
And we dont question the bravery of our young men and
women in the gulf today, we say they are lions led by
donkeys!"
On the lies being told about the Iraqi people:
"...debunked in the last 72 hours is the racist
nonsense that alone of all the people of the world,
the Iraqi people were just waiting for foreigners
to kill them in order to free them! Because the Iraqi
people are resisting in every town and city in Iraq,
and many of them have now given there lives to defend
their country."
"Dead Iraqis Can't Vote"
- a simple rebuttal to US claiming to bomb Iraq
in order to bring democracy
"Mr Blair said in his address that he wants to
create a world of order and stability. Well let me tell
him that a thousand cruise missiles at a million dollars
a throw, a billion dollars of death and destruction,
has set off an earthquake through out the world and
especially the Arab and Muslim world. That order and
stability is the very last thing which he has created.
Ten thousand new Bin Ladens have been born as a result
of that earthquake!"
He closed by sharing a lesson from the past:
" Now let in close with the words uttered by the
last British military commander to occupy Baghdad, General
Maud in 1917 entered Baghdad and said, and I quote directly
from the history books, he said 'we come not as conquerors
but as liberators'. Within three years thousands of
people including thousands of British people including
himself were dead in Iraq as the Iraqi people using
sticks and stones rose against the invaders. And the
Iraqi people drove out the last foreign occupiers of
their country and they'll drive out, God willing, this
[..army]."

Tariq Ali
Tariq
Ali, Broadcaster and Writer (*):
He started by blasted the Prime Minister and
his cabinet for their role in this unjust war:
"What sickens me is
when you hear the spin doctors of the Prime
Minister and his acolytes in the media saying
'at least we have a Prime Minister who despite
public opinion, despite being in a minority
in the country, leads from the front'. I dont
believe that. He doesn't lead from the front
when there is a war, he leads from behind. He
doesn't lead from any ordinary behind, he leads
from the behind of the American President! Where
he's been for years now. When you look at Blair
when he appears on television imagine whose
behind he's sticking out of.
That special relationship!
And he has a cabinet who
tell lies for him because he tells lies for
them. And one of the most blair faced liars
is an egocentric mediocrity called Jeff Hoon.
And when Jeff Hoon says in answer to a parliamentary
question that depleted uranium does not cause
cancer, we say to him you are a blair faced
liar.
When Tony Blair and Jack
Straw and their apologists say that they supported
the war in Iraq because Saddam had weapons of
mass destruction and chemical weapons, we say
you are a blair faced liar! You supported the
war because the United States asked you to."
He concluded by a very useful suggestion as
to the future path of the antiwar movement:
"We have got to transform
this great anti war movement in to a global
movement against the American empire..."

Mandy Telford
Mandy
Telford, President of National Union of Students
(NUS):
On the war:
"Hundreds
of thousands of students have been out on the streets
up and down the country to say no to war. This war
is not about terrorism... We are hear to say that
hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqis must not
be die. Not in our name!
A student member of CND giving out
leaflets,
face paint reads "NO WAR"
t-shirt reads "Not In My Name"
On the governments priorities:
This
is the government that says there is not enough
money to save our education system, no money to
pay lecturers what they deserve, no money to stop
students living in poverty, but money to go to war."
|
Jeremy Corbyn, MP
Jeremy
Corbyn, Member of British Parliament:
"I
seem to remember being told by Tony Blair
and Jack Straw last September and last October that
there was no question that Britain would go to war
without there being a moral, ethical, legal and United
Nations basis for it. Well Tony, there is no moral
basis for bombing Baghdad and Basra, there is no legal
authority - you didn't even put a resolution to the
UN because you knew that despite all the bribery,
and all the money that was offered over the past few
months not one country in the world other than Britain
and the United States was prepared to vote for war!"
A play on words - a tribute to the
French not caving in to US bullying

Paul Mackney
Paul
Mackney, General Secretary of the University
& College Lectures Union (NATFHE):
"After the bombing of Baghdad
last night I have some questions for her majesty's
ministers - who is the terrorist now Tony? Tell
us Jack Straw have you now got your evidence of
the weapons of mass destruction? And Clare [Short]
is there enough reconstruction to do?"
