50 face executions
|
Huda Kaya (right) and her three daughters (ages 16-19),
Nurcihan Saatcioglu, Gulan Intisar Saatcioglu &
Nurilhaq Saatcioglu
all facing death penalty.
|
Huda KAYA, her three daughters aged between 16 and 19 years, and fifty
others face the death penalty if found guilty of treason at their trials
which start next Monday 21st June 1999. Twenty others are also charged,
with the prosecutor requesting 5 - 22 year sentences for all.
They were all charged after Turkish Security Forces charged a demonstration
in Malatya last October, which was protesting against the Hijab ban in
Ynonu University. Evidence for these acts of treason include calling out
slogans for freedom, reciting poetry, visiting Iran and attending Friday
Prayers whilst there, choice of reading material and other spurious charges.

Dear Sir,
Re: Huda KAYA and the other Malatya detainees
I write with reference to the above.
I trust you are aware of the terrible travesty regarding the above. Ms.
Kaya, her daughters and some fifty others face execution for simply asking
for their rights to education and liberty in Turkey at a demonstration
in Malatya some months back. Detainees as young as 15 years old are charged
with treason and face execution. The trials of Ms. Kaya and others will
start on 21st June.
I demand that all charges be dropped and these prisoners of faith be
released forthwith. Your failure to respect their human rights, will only
serve to increase the boycott of all free-minded people of Turkish services
and products, and will encourage us to lobby for your exclusion from Europe.
Yours faithfully,
