[Boycott - Economic - Europe]

Comment:

This is an old article (from 2006) which has regained interest in Israel recently (Jan 2009) because of the huge protests in Turkey against the genocide in Gaza. According to israeli news site Ynet the photo of the shop sign is being used to encourage israelis to boycott Turkey as a holiday destination. We say good riddance - Turkey doesn't need them! But alarmingly the Ynet article also reveals that the Turkish shopkeeper was punished for boycotting "israeli child killers" - this is a sad state of affairs for a Muslim country:

The Turkish Embassy said at the time that the sign had been removed shortly after it was put up following an order by local authorities, and that those responsible for hanging it faced legal measures.

Danny Zimet, the Turkish Tourism Bureau's representative in Israel, expressed his regret over the reappearance of the three-year-old affair.

"After the picture was published in August 2006, I appealed to Turkey's Culture and Tourism Ministry to deal with the issue. And indeed, as reported to me by the office in Ankara, the store which hung the sign against Israel was punished and forced to shut down for a limited amount of time.

"It's important to stress that Turkey is the first Muslim country to recognize Israel de facto and engage in friendly relations and a strategic-military partnership with it for 60 years now. Turkey is now Israel's eighth largest commerce partner, and the mutual civil commerce between the countries is expected to generate $4 billion this year."

Turkey boycotts Israeli child killers

Turkey: Sign reads ‘Israeli murderers keep out’. Sign hung above clothing store in southern city of Alanya; Israeli tourist who photographed sign: Even on the way back to the cruise ship someone asked me if I was a solider and if I enjoy killing children

A sign reading “For Children killers Israelis No Sale, No Entry ” welcomed Israel tourists who passed by a clothing store in the city of Alanya in south Turkey.

The city is frequented by many Israelis, who arrive mainly on cruse ships during the summer.

“We entered the store because I didn’t notice the sign, which was hung very high,” said Nimrod Buchman, 25, of central Israel, who was on a trip with his girlfriend.

“The Turks immediately recognize Israelis, and therefore they asked us if we are soldiers and if we are capable of murdering children. They told us to leave and did not let us go inside. I had to take a photo of the shocking sign.”

When the vendor realized that Buchman had photographed the sign, an argument erupted.

“One of the salespeople began to chase after me and demanded to see what I had photographed,” Buchman said. “We argued for a while and then he began to curse, but when he understood that I was not about to give up the camera he left. We were very frightened, as were the other people present. Even on the way back to the cruise ship someone asked me if I was a solider and if I enjoy killing children.”

“I will definitely never return to this city, despite the fact that is amazing” Buchman said. “There is an uneasiness that surrounds you here, and people look at you with contempt.

During the holy month of Ramadan, as we move towards the Eid, I was going around Muslim shops in Tower Hamlets and elsewhere telling them that although they had collection boxes for the Mosque, although they had religious imagery in their shops, although they were selling dates to the faithful people to break their fast - the dates were made in Israel! They were stained with the blood of the Palestinian people! And Muslim shop keepers were selling them!
