Boycott Israel fatwa issued in JordanPalestine Note  Grand Husseini Mosque, Amman More than 50 Shariah scholars in Jordan issued an advisory opinion (fatwa) in support of an economic boycott of Israel, Al-Jazeera reported Wednesday. Non-compliance with the boycott "furthers the enemies of God," the scholars said, advocating economic non-cooperation over violence as a means of struggling against the Israeli occupation of Palestine. A number of prominent professors of Islamic law signed the fatwa. The fatwa statement said "the economic boycott of the Zionist enemy and its supporters countries and institutions [is] a [religiously prescribed] duty." It went on: "The exercise of all economic activities with the enemy, which includes import of goods, consumption or export of goods, the sell of real estate or renting of property to them, or to carry out brokerage, or promote their goods, or participation in the establishment of factories and companies, or work or exchange services with them, such as tourism and other economic activities... [must cease if this is to be] a Muslim country."
Former Waqf minister and Chairman of the Scholars of the Muslim Brotherhood in Jordan Ibrahim Zeid Kilani signed the fatwa, as did other Muslim Brotherhood members and Salafists as well as current and former deans of Islamic law faculties from universities across Jordan. Fighting with wallets not rocketsAn economic offense if the best defense against the "enemy [of] our Muslim brothers in Gaza, Iraq, Sudan and [elsewhere]," the advisory opinion continued. Economic boycott is "one of the faces of jihad... and non-compliance with an economic boycott [of] the enemy flag is judged as a major sin and does further the enemies of God." The scholars also called on other nations to boycott Israel as well, saying Muslims should recognize that funding Israel is tantamount to firing the weapon that kills Palestinians. The fatwa was released in tandem with the Jordanian Anti-normalization Committee's protest of friendly Jordanian-Israeli relations. The committee sported a list of merchants and companies who deal with Israel to be black-balled and a list of those to be honored for refusing to trade with Israel. The Anti-normalization Committee is organizing a festival for Saturday to show support for the boycott by burning Israeli goods in the central produce market south of Amman. Settler boycottIn recent months, the Palestinian government in the West Bank has issued a legally-binding boycott of the purchase, sell, and consumption of settler goods as a means of resisting the illegal occupation of the West Bank. The Palestinian government cannot conduct a boycott of Israeli goods, however, or they will be in breach of economic cooperation agreements.
