London Protest Demands Freedom For 300 Palestinian Children And Freedom For Khalida Jarrar

inminds
8 April 2015

On Thursday 2nd April 2015, as part of Inminds Palestinian Prisoners Campaign, activists protested outside the headquarters of the British security contractor G4S to demanded the immediate release of around 300 Palestinian children that Israel is currently caging in G4S secured dungeons. Activists also protested at the abduction that morning of Palestinian MP Khalida Jarrar by 50 Israeli soldiers who attacked her home in the early hours of the morning and dragged her away.

Last year Israel abducted 1266 Palestinian children - that's one child taken from their parents every 7 hours! During interrogation 75% of Palestinian children detained by Israel are physically tortured. 40% of the 600 children that were taken from Jerusalem alone, were sexually abused by Israeli soldiers during arrest or interrogation. Today around 300 Palestinian children are languishing in Israeli dungeons secured by G4S and powered by Hewlett Packard IT. These include the five Hares Boys who have been tortured and caged by Israel for 2 years for a crime that didn't even happen; and the 15 years old schoolboy Khaled Sheikh abducted from outside his home.

Free the children, Protest outside G4S HQ London

THE HARES BOYS

On 14th March 2013 a simple car accident, when a illegal Israeli settler car speeding along a road built illegally on stolen Palestinian land, crashed in to the back of an Israeli truck which had stopped to change a flat tire resulting in four people being hurt, was later at the behest of angry settlers presented as an attack by Palestinian stone throwing youth. The truck drivers earlier testimony that he stopped due to a flat tire was replaced with the new reason being that he had seen stones by the road, and an accident that happened after dark that nobody saw suddenly became a terror attack with 61 witnesses including the police!

Over the next few days over 50 masked Israeli soldiers with attack dogs stormed the local village of Hares in the early hours of the morning and in waves of violent arrests kidnapped the children of the village. In total 19 children were taken to the infamous G4S secured children's dungeon at Al Jalame and locked up in solitary confinement for up to 2 weeks in filthy windowless 1m by 2m hole in the ground cells with no mattress. The Israeli prime minister Benyamin Natanyahu announced to the settlers that he had “caught the terrorists”. The children were violently tortured and sexual threats were made against the female members of their families in order to coerce confessions from the boys.

With the confessions and the new “eye-witness” statements, five of the Hares boys were charged with 25 counts of attempted murder each, even though there were only four people in the car. Apparently the military court had decided that 25 stones were thrown, each with an "intent to kill". The five boys have been illegally transferred to Israel, in contravention of Article 76 of the Fourth Geneva Convention, to Megiddo prison where G4S provides the entire central command room. Hewlett Packard provides technical services and central servers that keep Israels dungeons and torture dens, including Megiddo, operational.

A sisters message..

In violation of international law Israel has turned prisons in to money making enterprises with the boys essentially forced to pay for their own imprisonment. Israel deliberately fails to provide Palestinian prisoners the basic essentials - edible food, cloths (underwear, shoes..) and hygiene products (soap, toothbrush..). The boys are forced to buy these at the extortionately priced prison shop costing the families over € 125/month to provide for one child's basic needs in prison.

With no evidence of a crime the military court keeps on postponing the hearing dates from one month to one year to two years, meanwhile the boys remain caged indefinitely and their families facing financial ruin in the process. A court hearing entails the families spending most of their day queuing and enduring the humiliation at the checkpoints where HP provides the biometric systems used to tag Palestinians, then waiting at the court in anticipation of catching a glimpse of their son.. often to be disappointed as hearing are cancelled without notice.

The United Nations Children's Fund UNICEF report on Children in Israeli Military Detention concludes that Israel is the only country in the world where children are systematically tried in military courts that by definition fall short of providing the necessary guarantees to ensure respect for their rights. The conviction rate in Israeli military courts is an unfathomable 99.74%.

If the five boys are convicted they will be locked up for over 25 years - five young lives ruined with no evidence of a crime let alone their guilt.

G4S provides the security systems, and Hewlett Packard the IT infrastructure, which keep these torture dens operational. Prisoners who have survived these hell holes recall seeing G4S logos on the cameras that witnessed their abuse. These companies are fully complicit in the crimes Israel commits against Palestinian children, and must be held to account.

KHALED SHEIKH

On Christmas day last year Israeli soldiers abducted 15 years old Khaled Sheikh from outside his home in Beit 'Anan in Jerusalem. He has been caged in Israel's notorious G4S secured Ofer prison for over three months now. Israel has denied him any family visits and he has been denied essential medical treatment. Accused of throwing a stone, Israel's military court on 25th February, true to its 99.74% conviction rate, sentenced Khaled to 4 months imprisonment and in addition fined him $500. Khaled suffers from several health issues including anaemia and has been denied his medication since his abduction in December. His family are fearful for his health and are urging activists around the world to intervene to secure the release of their son.

SPEECH - FREE THE CHILDREN - FREE KHALED SHEIKH

Speech - What of the children in Palestine?

We are here today outside the headquarters of British security contractor G4S to demand freedom for the 300 Palestinian children Israel has abducted and caged in prisons secured by G4S, and to demand G4S end its complicity in this crime.

One of the young children is Khaled Husam Sheikh, a 15 years old schoolboy, who is being caged at Israel's G4S secured Ofer prison. Khaled is from the village of Beit 'Anan in West Jerusalem. On Christmas day Khaled was abducted by Israeli soldiers from outside his home near Israel's illegal apartheid wall. They took him to Benyamin Interrogation Centre. When his father saw him at midnight the same day he said his son's face showed signs of the brutal beatings he had received. That was the last he saw of his son, Khaled was moved to Israel's G4S secured Ofer prison where all family visits have been denied.

The occupation has also denied Khaled essential medical treatment. Khaled suffers from several health issues including anaemia. At the military hearing when Khaled's father pleaded with the judge to let Khaled have his medication the judge dismissed him saying that the 15 year old schoolboy was a security threat to the state of Israel.

On 25th February 2015, the military court convicted Khaled on the usual trumped up charge of "throwing stones", and sentenced the 15 years old schoolboy to four months imprisonment, a $500 USD fine and five years probation.

Khaled's family are fearful for his health and are urging activists around the world to intervene to secure the release of their son. Khaled's father has been threatened and detained for publicising his son's plight and for asking international help to free his son. Recently international pressure helped release 14 years old Palestinian schoolgirl Malak from Israel's G4S secured dungeon at HaSharon. One of Malak's first actions upon release was to demand freedom for the other children, specifically Khaled Sheikh and the Hares Boys.

Last year Israel abducted 1266 Palestinian children - that's one child taken from their parents every 7 hours!

G4S is complicit in these abductions because it provides the security for Israel's dungeons where these children are caged and abused.

Shame on you G4S! Shame on you G4S!

40% of the 600 children that were taken from Jerusalem alone, were sexually abused by Israeli soldiers during arrest or interrogation. During interrogation 75% of Palestinian children detained by Israel are physically tortured.

G4S provides the security systems which keep these torture dens operational. Prisoners who have survived these hell holes recall seeing G4S logos on the cameras that witnessed their abuse.

Shame on you G4S! Shame on you G4S!

Currently Israel is caging around 300 Palestinian children in three prisons - Ofer prison in the West Bank, Megiddo prison in Israel and HaSharon prison in Israel. All three prisons are secured by the private British security contractor G4S. The transfer of Palestinian prisoners from the West Bank in to Israel, to HaSharon and Megiddo prisons, is illegal under international law. Its a direct contravention of Article 76 of the Fourth Geneva Convention to move prisoners out of occupied territory. The families of Palestinian child prisoners' now face many obstacles in obtaining permits to see their imprisoned children.

G4S is complicit in Israel's flouting of international law and of breaking the Geneva Convention by its provision of security to these illegal prisons in Israel which cage Palestinian children.

Shame on you G4S! Shame on you G4S!

We are here to demand the immediate release of all 300 Palestinian children that Israel is caging including Khaled Sheikh, and for G4S to stop its complicity in Israels violations of basic human rights by immediately ending its contracts with Israel's dungeons and torture dens and to pull out of Israel.

We demand freedom for the children!

Free the children!

Free Khaled!

Free Palestine!

SPEECH - FREE THE CHILDREN TORTURED IN G4S SECURED ISRAELI DUNGEONS

Speech - What of the children in Palestine?

We are here today outside the headquarters of British security contractor G4S to demand G4S stop its complicity in Israel's torture of children.

G4S secures Israeli dungeons and torture dens where Palestinian children are caged and abused.

One of these dungeons is the notorious Al Jalame interrogation centre in northern Israel where Palestinian children as young as 12 years old are caged three floors below the surface in tiny children's cells - filthy dark holes in the ground where a child is locked up without charge or trial in solitary confinement for up to 65 days in order to break them. Their only escape is the interrogation room where the children, shackled by hands and feet, are abused and tortured by the Israeli secret police for over 6 hours at a time, until they confess to trumped up charges, usually of throwing a stone which carries a penalty of up to 20 years!

G4S secures this hell hole!

Shame on you G4S! Shame on you G4S!

Al-Jalame - Israel's G4S secured torture den

Details of Al Jalame prison emerged from the testimonies of the children as reported by the Guardian newspaper in January 2012 and documented by Defence for children International and the Israeli human rights group B'Tselem:

The cell is 2m long by 1 m wide, it's as big as a mattress without the toilet - you put down the mattress and in front is a hole in the ground toilet - the stench from which has no escape.. there is no window, the air chokes you.

The light is kept on 24 hours a day to inhibit sleep. The walls have sharp protrusions to prevent you from leaning against them for support.

The delivery of food is through a locked flap in the door. It's the only way to mark time - dividing day from night by the arrival of food. The breakfast tray is dropped through the flap at 4am - if you dont catch the tray the food will spill on the floor and you will be punished.

The room is barely wider than the filthy 5cm thin mattress that covers the floor, many cells have no mattress.

For interrogation you are dragged upstairs. On the ground is an iron ring, the interrogator puts your cuffs through it with your hands locked on either side. he cuffs your ankles to the chair legs.. you cannot move.. like a statue. The sessions can last more than 6 hours. At some facilities children have been sexually assaulted by interrogators and threatened with sodomy with an object if they didnt confess. Sisters and mothers have been threatened with rape in order to coerce confessions from boys.

G4S secures this hell hole!

Shame on you G4S! Shame on you G4S!

Then there is the infamous "Russian compound" of Jerusalem prison where Israeli guards torture Palestinian women. One woman, Inam Qlambo who was arrested during a protest described how the soldiers struck blows to her face and tore her headscarf off, ripping her hair out.. they threw her to the ground and kicked her in the womb. Under interrogation at the Russian Compound they ordered her to strip naked. When she resisted they attached her body to an electric shock device and tortured her. She says "I felt my body burning under their machine.. the intense pain.. so severe.."

G4S secures this hell hole!

Shame on you G4S! Shame on you G4S!

After extracting forced confessions Palestinian women and young girls, like 14 years old Palestinian schoolgirl Malak , are sent to Israel's HaSharon prison. At HaSharon Palestinian women have had to endure beatings, sexually explicit harassment and sexual violence, and humiliation at the hands of Israeli guards. They are often forced to undergo degrading strip searches during the middle of the night - forced to squat naked and subjected to intrusive internal body searches, for no reason other than as a punitive measure. Women have been beaten and left tied to their bed for a day and a half and not allowed to go to the toilet as punishment for spilling water.

The cells at HaSharon are overcrowded and dirty, and infected with rats and cockroaches. There is a total absence of basic hygiene. Women have even been denied sanitary pads when menstruating.

The heat is unbearable, the windows are closed and covered so hardly any air or daylight can enter. The food is insufficient and often contains insects and worms, at times there is not enough portions for all the women.

G4S secures this hell hole!

Shame on you G4S! Shame on you G4S!

Then there is Israel's Megiddo prison where the five Hares Boys have been caged for over 2 years. Megiddo is also where Arafat Jaradat, young Palestinian father of two children aged 4 and 3 years old, was tortured to death on 23rd Feb 2013. Israel claimed he had died of a heart attack but the autopsy showed no signs of heart failure or any other illness but revealed broken bones and found his whole body was covered in "strong and excessive bruising".. "under the skin inside the muscle and along the spine at the bottom of the neck deep inside the tissue" and concluded the cause of death as "nervous shock as a result of extreme pain from the intensity of the injuries, which resulted from multiple direct and extensive acts of torture".

G4S secures this hell hole!

Shame on you G4S! Shame on you G4S!

We demand that G4S immediately stop its complicity in this torture of Palestinians by Israel.

Stop the torture! Stop the torture! Free Palestine!

SPEECH - FREE THE HARES BOYS

Speech - What of the children in Palestine?

We are here today outside the headquarters of British security contractor G4S to demand justice for the Hares Boys - five Palestinian children - Tamer Souf, Ali Shamlawi, Ammar Souf, Mohammed Suleiman, and Mohammed Kleib, abducted, tortured and caged by Israel in a G4S secured dungeon for a crime that didn't even happen. This weekend marks the second anniversary of their abduction. Today as we speak here in London, the boys are languishing, in the most atrocious conditions, in a dungeon in Israel.

On 14th March 2013 an illegal Israeli settler car speeding along a road on the West Bank, built on stolen Palestinian land, crashed in to the back of an Israeli truck which had stopped to change a flat tyre. When the children, who were mostly 16 years old, wouldn't confess, they were violently tortured and sexual threats were made against the female members of their families in order to force confessions from the boys.

With the confessions and the new “eye-witness” statements, five of the Hares boys were charged with 25 counts of attempted murder each, even though there were only four people in the car. Apparently the military court had decided that 25 stones were thrown, each with an "intent to kill" and they couldn't distinguish which boys had thrown which stone so each boys would be charged with throwing all 25 stones - 25 counts of attempted murder!

The five boys have been illegally transferred to Israel, in contravention of Article 76 of the Fourth Geneva Convention, to Megiddo prison where G4S provides the entire central command room. SPEECH - FREE KHALIDA JARRAR

Solidarity with Khalida Jarrar

Speech - What of the children in Palestine?

We are also here today to demand freedom for Khalida Jarrar who was abducted from her home in the early hours of this morning.

Khalida Jarrar is an elected Member of the Palestinian Parliament. She has dedicated her life to defending Palestinian political prisoners in occupation dungeons. She chairs the Prisoners' Committee of the Parliament and is former executive director of Addameer Prisoner Support and Human Rights Association and is a member of its board.

Yesterday Khalida Jarrar spoke passionately against the Israeli backed Saudi bombing of Yemen at a rally in Ramallah. Today, in the early hours of this morning, on 2nd April 2015, dozens of Israeli soldiers raided her home, kicked her door down and dragged her away whilst holding her husband in a separate room.

This isn't the first time the occupation has targeted Khalida Jarrar. Last August Israel tried to enforce an illegal expulsion order, expelling her from her home in Ramallah to exile in Jericho effective within 24h.

Jarrar refused to sign the expulsion order, saying “you, the occupation, are killing our Palestinian people. You practice mass arrests, demolish homes, kidnap people from their homes and deport them. It is you who must leave our home.”

The expulsion order violated the Fourth Geneva Convention which prohibits such forced transfers.

Khalida Jarrar moved in to a “protest tent” outside the Palestinian parliament building in Ramallah. She announced that she was going to stay and continue her work from there until the decision is revoked. She won and the illegal order was revoked.

There are now 18 members of the elected Palestinian parliament imprisoned by Israel.

We stand in solidarity with Khalida Jarrar and demand Israel immediately release Khalida and the other 18 members of the Palestinian parliament.

Freedom for Khalida!

Free the MPs!

Free Palestine!

Solidarity with Khalida Jarrar

"You cannot simplify the question of violence.. You look at human history - the American revolution, the civil war, the end of slavery in the United States, the African National Congress, the end of colonialism - by and large these were some combination of popular social uprisings and social movements and non-violent protests AND armed resistance. Now that doesn't mean I'm advocating for any armed action today, I'm not. I'm committed to finding ways of acting and speaking and making people laugh and doing art and disrupting the war machine in other ways, but I think focusing on violence when we have the comfort of being protected by mass of armed violence is not non-violence at all.. if you are pointing to the mass of violence and who's doing the mass of violence in the world today, you have to look to state violence - that's people bombing whole cities from the air..
